Each show on the tour will be a special event where the film will screen followed by Nas performing Illmatic start to finish. The film will open theatrically via Tribeca Film beginning in New York on October 1st, with a national expansion to follow. It will be available on demand and iTunes starting October 3rd. The tour and the theatrical release of the film will cap off Illmatics 20th anniversary celebration.

Nas: Time is Illmatic follows the trajectory of his 1994 landmark debut album, Illmatic. It traces Nas influences and the insurmountable odds he faced in creating the greatest work of music from hip-hops second golden era. The documentary is directed by multimedia artist, One9, written by Erik Parker, and produced by One9, Parker, and Anthony Saleh. The film was supported by The Ford Foundations Just Films, Tribeca Film Institutes Tribeca All Access program, and Hennessy V.S. to help bring Nas inspiring story of tireless pursuit of excellence to audiences nationwide.

"I want to thank Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and the Tribeca Film family for all of the love and support theyve given Time Is Illmatic, said Nas. It is an honor to be in partnership with them, and I feel there is a cultural kinship bonded by the city of New York."

When we started this project, Erik Parker and I couldnt imagine that audiences would one day be able to experience the film with a live performance of Illmatic, the album that started it all. It will make each night a truly special moment for the culture. We are sure people of all generations will be inspired by the story of Nas, the Jones family, and electrified by a live performance, said One9.

Nas recently released a special 20th Anniversary edition of the album, titled Illmatic XX. PRESS HERE to download it now. Released in 1994, the album spoke of a time and a culture that when paired with the Nas lyrical genius, went unmatched by the works of his peers both back then and now. Twenty years later, the success of Illmatic and the timeless body of work continues to draw comparisons between Nas and other hip hop artists of today. More recently, the conversation has shifted to draw comparisons between the success of Illmatic and Kendrick Lamars good kid, m.A.A.d city. During a recent interview with Complex Magazine, Nas addressed the comparisons between his debut album, Illmatic and Kendrick Lamars good kid, m.A.A.d city. With the massive success of Kendricks debut album, the pressure for an equally good or even better sophomore album is thick and can be a trying experience.

Nas, speaking with Complexs Insanul Ahmed, offers words of wisdom and advice to Lamar while sharing his experience on the completion of his sophomore album and addresses the comparisons between the two.

Read the Article Here

From www.nasirjones.com
Mon, 28 Jul 2014 14:42:00 -0700http://www.nasirjones.com/news/219663Finding Your Roots: Listen as Nas Shares His Experience on Discovering His Ancestry

On the upcoming second season of PBS "Finding Your Roots" with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Nas will appear on the show to trace the history of ancestors through five generations. The album, a testimony of times from the perspective of a teenage emcee, would go on to be hailed as one of the most influential pieces of work that hip hop has ever seen, while connecting with the masses. Nas was asked if he knew he was creating a masterpiece to which he replied, "Definitely, it was my intention to make this album a game changer. If we werent talking about it today it would have been just a fail. I definitely knew that this was special. I was excited and really happy because I knew I was coming to change things, for sure." Nas continues the conversation discussing the elements of historical value that he purposely included on the album, if he still listens to the album, and rumors of a sequel.

In celebration of the albums anniversary, Nas has issued a re-release of the album, Illmatic XX, complete with new remixes and previously un-released freestyles.

From www.nasirjones.com
Thu, 08 May 2014 10:53:00 -0700http://www.nasirjones.com/news/210293NPR Discusses Nas' Debut Album in "Illmatic": The Making Of A Classic

As the 20th anniversary for Nas Illmatic continues, the album has proven to stand the test of time and continues to remain culturally, politically, and socially relevant. Celebrated by many as the holy grail of hip hop, Illmatic was born out of a time where hip hop music was in a transition of turmoil for many fans who were upset with the commercial material that was taking over the airwaves. It was at this critical moment that a teenage emcee would reclaim hip hop with the release of his debut album, Illmatic. Nas, who was only 17 years old during the recording of the album, painted vivid depictions of personal struggle and real life situations that resonated with the masses, making him a household name and Illmatic a timeless classic. "Illmatic remains the pinnacle of Nas career. The stories within it the disappearance of the middle class, the climbing number of black men in prison could have been written today." NPRs Frannie Kelley takes a look at the making of Nas classic album, Illmatic with exclusive interviews from Faith Newman, Minyah Oh, and Nasir Jones, himself.

Listen Now

From www.nasirjones.com
Tue, 06 May 2014 11:28:00 -0700http://www.nasirjones.com/news/210073Castle Lite Presents Nas, Timbaland & Wiz Khalifa In Concert

Castle Lite has officially announced the line up for their Extra Cold Music Concert, taking place June 7th at the Supersport Park in Centurion, South Africa. It was also announced that TFFs Opening Night, the world premiere of Time is Illmatic followed by a performance by legendary rapper Nas, will take place at the iconic Beacon Theatre with tickets for sale to the public. Opening Night is co-sponsored by Hennessy. The 2014 Festival will take place from April 16 - 27 in New York City.

Tickets to Opening Night on April 16 will be available at tribecafilm.com/openingnight beginning on March 27 at 11:00 a.m. for American Express Card Members and on April 1 at 11:00 a.m. for the general public. Director One9s documentary Time is Illmatic, follows the trajectory of Nas 1994 landmark debut album, widely considered one of the most important and revolutionary albums in hip-hop.

Music is a prominent thread throughout the Festival this year, and the Untitled James Brown Documentary and Bjrk: Biophilia Live are great compliments to our already exciting slate, said Genna Terranova, Director of Programming. Nas and his work have been beloved by New Yorkers for years and we are thrilled to be celebrating his music with everyone on opening night. Information on the late additions in the special section can be found below:

Untitled James Brown Documentary, directed and written by Alex Gibney. (USA) Work In Progress, Documentary. James Brown changed the face of American music. Soul Brother Number One, as he was known, pioneered the journey from rhythm and blues to funk. More than that, this American legend - who willed himself to life after he was stillborn - was a classic embodiment of the American dream. The son of a "turpentine man" from rural South Carolina, Brown became one the greatest live performers ever known, the "hardest working man in show business," and a self-made millionaire. As he often said, it was "show AND business." Once successful, one of his first orders of business was to launch the soundtrack for a new civil rights movement: "Say It Loud: Im Black and Im Proud." With unique cooperation of the Brown estate, this is a definitive documentary biography of the James Brown story and legend, 1933-1974. The screening will be followed by a special conversation with Director Alex Gibney on April 27.

Bjrk: Biophilia Live, directed by Nick Fenton & Peter Strickland. (UK) World Premiere, Documentary. From a mind unlike any other, Biophilia Live chronicles the multidimensional concert centered on the eighth studio album of avant-garde Icelandic artist Bjrk. Directors Nick Fenton & Peter Strickland, unique voices in their own right, film Bjrk live in performance, and punctuate her music with evocative animation from apps created by the worlds top 10 designers combined with science and nature archive and found footage. This is inspired by the themes of the album which explore the relationships between musical structures and natural phenomena - atomic, cellular and cosmic. The infinitely creative journey presents a culmination of work that represents one of the most original musical endeavors of a generation. The film will screen at TFF on April 26.

For festival tickets please visit www.tribecafilm.com/festival/tickets

From www.nasirjones.com
Thu, 27 Mar 2014 12:17:00 -0700http://www.nasirjones.com/news/205863See Nas Live at Lollapalooza 2014
Yesterday, Lollapalooza released the official lineup for one of the countries most anticipated music festivals of the year. Released April 19, 1994, the album is cherished as a classic and debated by many as the hip hop bible. Classic production, extraordinary wordplay, and the point of view of a 17 year old teen growing up in the projects seemed to connect with the masses and resonate a feeling of culture in the hip hop youth. There arent many arguments against the significance of the album and the talent of the young MC, who was 19 years old when the album was released. Nas created a legacy with Illmatic and fans were eagerly awaiting for the next chapter of that legacy with the release of his sophomore album, It Was Written. Released two years after Illmatic, the album took to appeal to a more mainstream audience and proved to be Nas most commercially successful release to date. The album included the iconic track If I Ruled The World (Imagine That) featuring Lauryn Hill, as well as other classics including The Message and Street Dreams. Both of these albums are special in their own rite and deserve equal praise for the impact they forged during what many consider to be the golden era of hip hop. This year, Nas, along with The Game, were honored for their acts of philanthropy and charity throughout their serving communities. Nas was specifically honored for his call to action last year in the case of a single and unemployed father of eight, Stanley Young. Young, a recent widow and laid off construction member in Washington DC, came to the attention of the MC when his manager was visiting the city and saw a news segment of the man pleading for assistance after losing his home in a fire started by a near by facility. Nas, who was on tour in Japan was sent an email with Youngs story and immediately reacted, calling for a call to action to raise money for the man and his family. Within days, Nas used his social media and celebrity platforms to garner attention and raise over $40,000 to assist the single father and his family through the online donation site, Crowdtilt. Nas also donated $10,000 to the Young Family and released the following statement, As a single father I couldnt help but feel for Stanley. He has my [utmost] respect as a man. It takes a real one to do whatever it takes to help his family. I want to help the Young family get a fresh start on life and I want the world to know that they can help make a difference if they stick together. We are learning an incredible lesson and Stanley is the teacher of that lesson. I cannot wait to meet them in person. Humbling himself as a man and a human being, Nas stripped his celebrity in order to prove to the public and the youth especially, that we all have duty to impact the lives of one another and take care of our communities.

From www.nasirjones.com
Tue, 21 Jan 2014 11:05:00 -0800http://www.nasirjones.com/news/198713SXSW: Nas To Interview Ben Horowitz at SXSW Interactive
South by Southwest kicks off March 7th with an amazing and impressive schedule.
