Thanks to Illmatic: A ‘Doc/Tape’ Homage to a Hip Hop Classic
Illmatic was released in January 1994 only one year after I was born and yet it has had such a huge influence on Hip Hop and me as a person as well as my musical style. From the moment I heard the gritty sounds of the trains passing in the Genesis, before Nas had even spoken a word I was captured in the New York State of Mind.
I have always gave reference to Nas in someway in my tracks but this time I wanted to dedicate a whole mix tape thanking him so as it is the 20th anniversary of Illmatic I thought it was the perfect time. I plan on releasing the doc/tape April 8th a week before Nas drops Illmatic X X. This project is a salute to Illmatic. I have created my own term 'doc/tape' which means 'documentary mixtape' where I have made and still creating a mixtape and visual documentary paying homage to the classic album made by Nas in 1994.
I tweeted Faith Newman for finding Nas and I was surprised that she even replied! #Legend!
Thanks To Illmatic is my way of giving back not a remake of the classic; as we know Elzhi did 'Elmatic'. The reason why I didn't want to even try and attempt to remake the album firstly I would be trying to compete against the greats such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-tip, Large Professor and L.E.S. I didn't want to do that because I know I wouldn't have got the sound as perfect as they did. Therefore, I kept the concept similar, but added production from the likes of DexBeatZ, LoveKavi and myself. I didn't want too many people tampering with it as this is very sentimental and meaningful to me.
Please watch the preview of the Thanks To Nas music video and let me know what you think of the project so far.
